About

I study popular music as a cultural and industrial system in which gender, sexuality, and power are produced and negotiated. Bringing together musicological interpretation and data-driven analysis, my work traces how patterns of collaboration, circulation, and visibility shape inequality in music of the Américas and Spain.

Originally trained in physics and classical guitar, I bring an interdisciplinary perspective to the study of popular music.

I am Full Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, with a joint appointment in College UC and the Instituto de Música, and I currently serve as Director de Docencia at College UC. I earned my Ph.D. in Music History at the University of Pennsylvania and have held visiting positions at UT Austin, Brown University, Tulane University, the University of Oregon, and the University of Georgia. In 2027, I will be Loewenstein Fellow and Visiting Professor in Political Science at Amherst College.

Research

My work focuses on popular music as a site where gender, sexuality, and politics are negotiated. I have published on Víctor Jara, gender performance in Latin American music, and the cultural role of music in social movements. My current research develops both qualitative and quantitative approaches to the study of musical cultures in the region.
